HISTORY OF EASTON'S VARSITY "E" LOGO

Back in September of 1955, the Board of Directors of the "Alumni Varsity E Club" resolved to develop a program of publicity and fundraising to promote the club and its goals.  To head the effort, the board appointed Jay Golden, an Easton graduate and salesman with the Industrial Engraving Co.

Golden determined that to easily identify the organization, a distinctive logo would be needed.  He enlisted Jim Wilcox, an artist at Ingersoll-Rand, and suggested a combination of the block "E" with the Red Rover Bulldog.

Wilcox submitted three sketches, and the board selected the current logo.  At first, the logo included the words "Easton Red Rovers", but this was dropped for better visibility when the logo was used in reduced sizes, such as pins.

That logo has survived, unchanged, and has seen many uses in the past five decades.  It has appeared in various sizes on athletic, band, and cheerleader uniforms, sweaters, T-shirts, decals, lapel pins, and in advertising/promotional media.  Its fierce bulldog has been the fighting symbol of Easton's championship teams.

This year (2005), the Varsity "E" logo sees its 50th anniversary.  The committee, club officers, and directors in 1955 included: Nick Boscia, Joe Dorsey, Jay Golden, "Ink" Gutzweiler, Bud Hartman, Bob Holbrook, Harry Kraus, William Kraus, Leo Martin, Robert Mengel, Bob Michler, Earl Paulson, Reed Transue, and William Woodring.

In 2005, the Alumni Varsity "E" Club celebrates its 57th birthday, and is believed to be the oldest continuously running club in Pennsylvania.  During its history, the club has saved our school district and taxpayers more than a million dollars.  The future of the Alumni Varsity "E" Club is to continue their awards of achievement in all sports, the financing of special athletic equipment to the Easton Area School District, and the awarding of scholarships to "E" winning senior class members.
